The sky over Iran just got a lot more dangerous. In a series of intense events yesterday, the Iranian military claimed they successfully shot down two U.S. Air Force MQ-9 Reaper drones.
These aren’t your average toy drones from the mall. The MQ-9 Reaper is a massive, high-tech “hunter-killer” that costs about $16 million each. Seeing two of them go down in a single day is a huge deal for the U.S. military and a major win for Iran’s defense teams.
What Happened?
According to reports from the IRGC (the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps), their air defense systems locked onto the drones as they were flying over the Isfahan province and the Strait of Hormuz.
Videos have started surfacing on social media showing the exact moment the missiles hit. In the footage, you can see a bright flash in the sky followed by a long trail of smoke as the multi-million dollar machines spiral toward the ground.
