A Ghanaian immigrant and local politician in Germany said that he would not fight for Germany in case of war but would fight for Ghana.
Suraj Mailitafi, who was born in Ghana and moved to Germany at age nine, gave an interview to the left-wing German podcaster known as Marcant. Mailitafi is a German citizen who has served as a municipal councilor for the leftist Green Party in Bersenbrück since 2021. He is also the spokesperson for “Bündnis Widersetzen,” an “antifascist” activist group that wants to “resist the AfD, fascism, and right-wing politic s— through mass civil disobedience.”
Marcant said that right-wingers often argue that immigrants with dual nationalities would not fight for Germany in case of war but would fight for their original home country, showing that their loyalties do not lie with their adopted home even if they have lived in Germany for many years.
He asked Mailitafi how he viewed this narrative. His answer turned into a viral clip online because it confirmed right-wing critiques against mass immigration.

“The question is: What are we fighting for? Whose power are we fighting for? And what does this power give me?” Mailitafi said. “What do these wars give me? And especially in the capitalist system that we live in, it’s not like I’m fighting for myself.”
“I fundamentally would not fight for Germany or for any European country. And I’ve often asked: ‘Okay, I’m native Ghanaian, would I fight for Ghana?’”
“And I think yes, I would fight for Ghana,” he stated.
“Because when we look at it historically and globally, the reality is that Africa – and the Global South as a whole — faces a stark power imbalance compared to Europe, and we’ve always been the ones who’ve been exploited. And when it comes to breaking that cycle, I’m on board,” Mailitafi concluded.
