Legendary actor and action icon Chuck Norris is dead at 86. A familiar face in film and television, Norris was also an early figure in internet culture. Known for his roundhouse kicks and signature look, the star of Walker, Texas Ranger, was respected by many fans around the world.

His family confirmed his death in an Instagram post Friday morning.

“It is with heavy hearts that our family shares the sudden passing of our beloved Chuck Norris yesterday morning,” they wrote. “While we would like to keep the circumstances private, please know that he was surrounded by his family and was at peace.”

They added, “To the world, he was a martial artist, actor, and a symbol of strength. To us, he was a devoted husband, a loving father and grandfather, an incredible brother, and the heart of our family. He lived his life with faith, purpose, and an unwavering commitment to the people he loved. Through his work, discipline, and kindness, he inspired millions around the world and left a lasting impact on so many lives.”

From Shyness to Stardom

Word that Chuck Norris was dead came a day after reports that he had been taken to a hospital in Hawaii. The news came as a shock to many, as on March 10 the actor had celebrated his birthday with an Instagram post of himself boxing and training.

Born Carlos Ray Norris in Ryan, Oklahoma, the future star had a difficult upbringing. His father was an abusive alcoholic who was often absent. During that time, his mother worked to provide for the family. In interviews and his memoir, Norris said that he struggled with shyness and a poor self-image.

After graduating high school, Norris enlisted in the Air Force. While stationed in Korea he began to train in Karate. It was through teaching martial arts after returning home that he said he began developing self-confidence.. One of his students, Steve McQueen—another iconic Hollywood “tough guy”—encouraged him to pursue acting. He was cast in his first film, 1972’s Way of the Dragon, after meeting star Bruce Lee at a martial arts competition.

A series of starring roles followed. While the films have become staples of the action genre, Norris said that he didn’t believe that they were excessively violent.

“The buildup makes it look like more. I do violence in a self-defense way,” he told People in a 1985 interview. Notably, Norris’s films avoided sex, drugs, and alcohol. He said that he wanted to be an example to his audience.

Going Primetime

Chuck Norris made the transition to television in 1993 in what may have been his most definitive role. Walker, Texas Ranger ran for eight seasons on CBS, and by 1996 it was a top ten show. Discussing it with The Los Angeles Times, Norris said “There’s heart and it’s emotional and gripping.”

Perhaps more than that, Walker, Texas Ranger provided something aspirational to audiences. As Walker, Norris wasn’t just shown fighting crime, but also serving his community and helping his neighbors. Except for the occasional cliffhanger, most episodes end with Walker and his team laughing—and audiences could smile along with the satisfaction that justice had been served.

While the show ended in 2001, the legend of Chuck Norris was only beginning.

While Norris hadn’t appeared on screen since 2012’s The Expendables 2, he remained active. For a time, he served as a spokesperson for the U.S. Veterans Administration. In 2016, he endorsed Donald Trump’s presidential campaign.

Norris is survived by his wife, Gena O’Kelley, and his children.
