March 31, 2026 — Let’s be honest: when Sony first unveiled “Project Q,” the skepticism was loud enough to drown out a PS5 fan on boost mode. A £200 peripheral that required a console and god-tier WiFi? It felt like an expensive curio.
But fast forward to today, and the landscape has shifted. Between the global memory crisis and the ongoing instability in the Middle East, high-end hardware is becoming a luxury many are struggling to maintain. In this climate, the PlayStation Portal has evolved from a niche accessory into a vital survival tool for the modern gamer.
Sony’s Handheld Revolution is Here.
Thinking With Portals: The PS5-Free Future
The real game-changer arrived in late 2025. Sony finally unlocked Cloud Streaming for PlayStation Plus Premium members, effectively allowing the Portal to bypass the PS5 entirely for major hits. We’re talking Astro Bot, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, and Ghost of Yōtei—all playable without even turning on your home console.
For many of us, the Portal has become the primary screen. Whether it’s playing Ball X Pit while the “Great British Menu” dominates the big TV, or grinding through the stylish arcade racer Screamer while half-watching Dragon Ball Z in bed, the “mighty little peripheral” has snuck its way into the center of the PlayStation ecosystem.
The 48-Hour Warning: The Price Hike is Coming
If you’ve been on the fence, your window of “affordability” is closing fast. As of April 2nd—just two days from now—Sony is applying a significant price increase across the PlayStation range.
- Current Price: £199.99
- New Price: £219.99
While £20 might not seem like a dealbreaker, it represents a psychological shift. We’re moving away from that comfortable “under 200” bracket into a territory where luxury gaming feels increasingly out of reach. Given the “AI bubble” and the rising costs of tech components, this is likely the cheapest the Portal will be for the foreseeable future.

The Ultimate Safety Net
With the “Iran war” and global supply chain uncertainty, the prospect of replacing a dead PS5 is becoming a nightmare. The Portal offers a unique insurance policy. If your main console bites the dust, a PS Plus sub and your Portal keep the library accessible. It might not be the 4K “Pro” experience Sony markets, but it’s a high-quality gateway that keeps you in the game when the world gets expensive.
The Verdict: If you can find one at the £199 price point today, grab it. Before the week is out, you’ll be glad you did.
