New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani said that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s attacks during his speech at the UN General Assembly are an attempt to shift attention from the actions of the Israeli leadership in the Gaza Strip.
Earlier, Netanyahu spoke at the 81st session of the UN General Assembly in New York. A significant part of the delegations left the hall even before his speech began in protest. The Israeli prime minister called the departed «moral cowards», rejected Israel’s accusations of genocide and said that his country, on the contrary, prevented genocide.
Netanyahu dedicated a separate part of his speech to Mamdani. He called the mayor of New York an anti-Semite, accused him of spreading «lies» about Israel and said that after Mamdani’s election, Jews allegedly began to feel less safe in the largest American city. In addition, Netanyahu recalled Mamdani’s previous statements regarding the possible arrest of the Israeli prime minister if he arrives in New York.
Mamdani responded by saying that Netanyahu is trying to turn the situation into a personal skirmish in order to avoid discussing the responsibility of the Israeli leadership for what is happening in Gaza:

This is all an attempt to divert attention from responsibility, to name as many people as possible, to try to turn it into a skirmish. It’s not about me and him. The fact is that he is the architect of genocide. Architects of genocide do just that.
According to the mayor, this is why Netanyahu, in his opinion, spoke about him and other critics of Israel during his speech instead of responding to accusations against Israeli policies. Mamdani has previously called Israel’s actions in Gaza genocide.
Thus, the speech at the UN was a continuation of the public conflict between the Israeli prime minister and the mayor of New York: Netanyahu accuses Mamdani of anti-Semitism and supporting forces hostile to Israel, while Mamdani connects criticism of himself primarily with Netanyahu’s attempt to protect his policies in Gaza from international accusations.
