The box office has a new king, and he wears a red cap. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie officially touched down this week, and the numbers are nothing short of astronomical. Proving that the 2023 Mario phenomenon was no fluke, the sequel is currently on track to earn $129.4 million domestically by Sunday evening.
This massive haul easily dethrones Project Hail Mary ($80.5 million) for the biggest opening weekend of 2026 so far.
The Five-Day Warp Pipe
While the film is a record-breaker for 2026, it’s currently in a neck-and-neck race with its predecessor’s legacy. Over its first five days (opening Wednesday, April 1 through Sunday, April 4), Super Mario Galaxy is projected to pull in between $190 million and $200 million.
While staggering, this falls just shy of the $204 million domestic five-day start set by The Super Mario Bros. Movie in 2023.

The “Adam Aron” Effect: A Merch Gold Rush
The success isn’t just happening on the screen. AMC CEO Adam Aron has reported a “merch mania” unlike anything the theater chain has seen in years. AMC locations across the U.S. ordered over 500,000 themed pieces for the launch—the highest volume for any single film since the Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour movie in late 2023.
“In just the first three days, we already have sold more Super Mario themed product than for any other movie since Taylor’s concert film,” Aron stated. He noted that as of Friday, two-thirds of the inventory was already gone, with a total sell-out expected by mid-week.
Video Spotlight: Heroes Rise Again
The teaser trailer for the film highlights the shift from the Mushroom Kingdom to the cosmos. Featuring a more atmospheric, high-stakes tone, the footage shows Mario defying gravity and encountering Rosalina and the Lumas for the first time on the big screen.

At The Philly PI, we track the intersection of massive corporate IP and consumer behavior. The “Super Mario Galaxy” phenomenon is a prime example of a “Safe” Corporate Narrative that nonetheless manages to capture the global imagination. It’s a platform built on nostalgia, but its economic impact—from AMC’s merch strategy to the “Project Hail Mary” upset—is a story we can’t ignore.
We provide the box office data; you decide if the “Galaxy” expansion lives up to the hype.
