The war in Ukraine has been going on for years, but today, a high-ranking Russian official named Dmitry Peskov sent a message that has everyone talking. He said the “hot phase” of the war—the heavy fighting—could stop almost immediately if Ukraine agrees to one major condition.
The Ultimatum: Leave the Donbas
Peskov stated that Ukrainian President Zelensky needs to make a “difficult decision” and order his troops to pull out of the Donbas region. Specifically, Russia wants Ukraine to move its army past the old borders of the Donetsk People’s Republic.
Peskov argued that making this move “yesterday” would have saved thousands of lives.
What is Zelensky Saying?
President Zelensky confirmed that Russia has given him a deadline. According to him, Russia wants the Ukrainian Armed Forces (UAF) out of the Donbas within two months. If they don’t leave by then, Russia says the “peace conditions” will change—which usually means the fighting will get even worse.

The “Big Trade”: Zaporizhia and Kherson
Military experts are looking at this as a massive hint. For a long time, Russia claimed it wanted to keep four regions of Ukraine. But this new message suggests a “trade”:
- What Russia wants: Full control over the Donbas (the industrial heart of the East).
- What Russia might give up: Experts believe Russia might be willing to stop fighting for the southern regions of Zaporizhia and Kherson if they get the Donbas.
Why Does the Donbas Matter?
The Donbas is famous for its coal mines and massive factories. For Russia, capturing this area would be a “victory” they could show their people. For Ukraine, giving it up would mean losing a huge part of their history and their economy.
The Bottom Line: This is a high-stakes game of “chicken.” Russia is offering a way to stop the bombs, but the price is giving up a giant piece of the country. Whether Zelensky accepts the deal or keeps fighting is the biggest question of 2026.
