Did Trump’s FDA pick just make a 180 on abortion pills?

President Donald Trump’s Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Commissioner nominee, Dr. Heidi Overton, appeared to back off her previous statements about the dangers of the abortion drug mifepristone during her Senate confirmation hearing on Thursday.

Overton, who is currently a domestic policy official in the Trump White House, sidestepped a senator’s questions about the drug, commonly shipped by mail for home abortions with no in-person contact between the recipients and the prescribing abortionists.

She declined to say whether she still maintains that mifepristone is dangerous to women. She reportedly stated FDA’s existing policy positions instead of boldly sharing her negative personal views about the abortion drug as she had previously.

When Washington state’s leftist Democrat Senator Patty Murray asked Overton, “Do you agree with the FDA’s approval of mifepristone, which means the agency deems it safe and effective?”  Overton would only say, “Mifepristone was approved by the FDA as having met its safety and efficacy standard.”

In 2023, Overton co-authored a paper on the “Dangerous rise of chemical abortion.”

“Abortion is corrosive to children, women, and society broadly because it devalues and extinguishes innocent human life. Unfortunately, federal policymakers have recently expanded access to abortion pills, also called chemical abortions, which are far more dangerous to women, enabling rapid access to abortion,” wrote Overton, along with coauthor Matias Perttula.

Abortion by mail, referred to by activists as “telehealth,” is big business; and since the Supreme Court’s overturning of Roe v. Wade in 2022, it has become a leading method of abortion in the U.S.

As of 2023, 65 percent of abortions in the United States were chemical abortions, according to the pro-abortion Guttmacher Institute. And as of December 2025, more than one in four abortions committed by clinicians in the United States were done via telehealth.

In advance of the hearing, abortion activists claimed that “Dr. Overton’s anti-abortion record showcases her commitment to banning medication abortion” and declared her to be a “dangerous nomination.”

“She celebrated the overturning of Roe v. Wade as ‘a huge victory for life,’ dismissed federal legislation protecting abortion rights as ‘radicalism,’ and has promoted false claims about the safety of medication abortion that contradict more than two decades of evidence,” they wrote.

“Her nomination to this role is one of the greatest threats to abortion access and reproductive care since the Dobbs decision and would satisfy anti-abortion extremists who are working relentlessly to ban abortion nationwide,” they asserted.

Meanwhile, pro-life leaders appeared to express growing concern about Overton’s commitment to reversing Biden-era mifepristone policies.

Before the Senate hearing, 50 national and statewide pro-life leaders signed a joint letter urging her to use the confirmation hearing “to make clear what she plans to do about the FDA’s extremely permissive policy governing mifepristone.”

In contrast with pro-abortion activists, the group pointed out that there are, in fact, serious concerns about the drug’s safety.

They cited a recent study that found that nearly 11 percent of women taking mifepristone have a serious “adverse event” within 45 days of taking it.

“The permissiveness of the current policy is increasing the risk of abuse, especially by men who seek to force women to have abortions without their consent or knowledge,” the group contended. “By allowing mifepristone to be obtained without an in-person medical visit, the current FDA policy makes it more difficult to screen vulnerable women outside the presence of potential abusers.”

Lastly, they said that mail-order abortion is “undermining state laws enacted to protect unborn life and women.”
