Tensions in the Strait of Hormuz reached a fever pitch this Sunday as an Iranian surface-to-air missile narrowly missed a U.S. Air Force F-15E Strike Eagle. Combat footage released by Iranian state media shows the interceptor passing dangerously close to the jet before the pilot initiated aggressive defensive maneuvers, deploying LTC (flares) to successfully decoy the incoming threat.
The engagement occurred near Hormuz Island, a critical flashpoint in the ongoing Operation Epic Fury. While Tehran claimed a successful “hit,” U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) has officially rejected the report, stating that no American fighters were downed in the incident.
The “Invisible” Threat: Passive Guidance
Defense analysts are drawing parallels between this engagement and a recent incident involving an F-35A, which sustained shrapnel damage over central Iran on March 19. In both cases, pilots appeared to have little to no warning of the launch, suggesting the use of:
- AD-08 Majid: A mobile, short-range system using passive EO/IR (Electro-Optical/Infrared) tracking.
- The “358” Missile: A loitering anti-air munition designed to ambush aircraft from concealed positions.
- Passive Engagement: Because these systems do not emit radar signals, they can bypass traditional Radar Warning Receivers (RWR), making them a “silent” and deadly threat to even stealth platforms.
As the US continues its 8,000+ combat sortie campaign, the persistence of these light, mobile air defense units remains the primary obstacle to total air supremacy over the Iranian coast.
