Kurt Weldon’s 9/11 Bombshell on Jimmy Dore

Former Republican Congressman Kurt Weldon—who served Pennsylvania’s 7th district from 1987 to 2007 and was poised to become Chairman of the House Armed Services Committee—has released a controversial new book titled Able Danger: What the 9/11 Commission Never Told You. Speaking in a recent interview, Weldon presented newly surfaced documents, witness interviews, and personal accounts that allege top U.S. officials intentionally suppressed intelligence ahead of September 11, 2001, and orchestrated a decades-long cover-up.

The October 2006 Memo and “Able Danger”

At the heart of Weldon’s latest revelations is a 17-page legal document and a personal memo he claims to have retrieved from his personal archives. According to Weldon, on October 16, 2006—just three weeks before his congressional election—the FBI raided his daughter’s home in what he describes as a politically motivated move to prevent him from assuming the chairmanship of the Armed Services Committee.

Later that same day, Weldon alleges he received a personal email on private stationery from a top advisor to then-Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld.

“The memo says: ‘Kurt, I warned you about Able Danger. Dick and Don are now going to destroy you,'” Weldon stated. “You’ve exposed Able Danger, their top secret plumbers leak program to give indications of any intelligence about what they were running, which was 9/11.”

Weldon contends that Able Danger—a secret data-mining unit established by the Joint Chiefs of Staff to track global Al-Qaeda networks—was unknowingly leveraged by high-level officials to monitor which military and intelligence units were uncovering details about the impending attacks prior to September 11.

Intelligence Pre-Knowledge and the Brooklyn Cell

Weldon’s book details accounts from military intelligence personnel and CIA-contracted data analysts, claiming that government programs had identified lead 9/11 hijacker Mohamed Atta and his Brooklyn-based cell as early as 2000—more than a year before the attacks took place.

Among the specific claims outlined in the book:

• The June 2001 Warning: A CIA-contracted open-source data-mining expert quoted in the book claims that by June 1, 2001, intelligence operatives knew an attack on U.S. soil was scheduled between September and December 2001.
• Name Manipulation: The same source alleged that officials played administrative name games with Mohamed Atta’s identity (referring to him as “Mohamed Elsa”) to obscure the fact that the Able Danger team had successfully identified him.
• The USS Cole Attack: The book alleges that one month prior to the October 2000 bombing of the USS Cole in Yemen, a European source provided actionable intelligence regarding the planned strike. The information was allegedly withheld from command staff, leaving 17 American sailors unprotected.

Weldon further stated that an Army intelligence officer, Eric Kleinmith, was ordered to destroy 2.5 terabytes of Able Danger data to keep the information from coming to light.

Allegations of Commission Suppression and Media Retaliation

Weldon sharply criticized the official 9/11 Commission Report, calling its omission of the Able Danger program “the biggest cover-up in the history of the nation.” He claims that while individual commissioners were kept in the dark, key staff leadership actively prevented crucial testimony from being recorded.

Specifically, Weldon highlighted the experience of Lieutenant Colonel Tony Schaefer, a Bronze Star recipient who attempted to brief 9/11 Commission Director Phil Zelikow on Able Danger while deployed in Afghanistan. Upon returning to the United States, Schaefer had his security clearances revoked, his files seized, and his initial tell-all book manuscript, Dark Heart, intercepted. According to Weldon, the U.S. government purchased and destroyed all 9,500 original first-edition copies of Schaefer’s book to remove references to the Commission’s pre-attack knowledge.

“They wouldn’t even let me testify,” said Weldon, who noted his dual roles at the time as Vice Chairman of the Defense Committee and Vice Chairman of Homeland Security. “There was no mention of Able Danger in the 9/11 Commission report at all.”

Calls for an Independent Investigation

Weldon says he kept his original manuscript hidden for years due to legitimate threats against his family, noting that three former intelligence colleagues who assisted in updating the work passed away within short windows after re-engaging with the material.

With the digitized and indexed archives now prepared, Weldon is calling for a newly appointed, fully independent commission free from defense contractors and intelligence-funded think tanks to investigate the full scope of 9/11 intelligence failures and cover-ups.
