JK Rowling calls attention to detransitioner’s story, gender ideology’s ‘cultish culture’

(LifeSiteNews) — In a post to X, J.K. Rowling again took aim at the harmful results of gender ideology, sharing a story from the Independent Woman in which a detransitioner explained how she was pressured into taking testosterone at 14 without any viable alternatives.

“A week after my 14th birthday, I was prescribed testosterone and no one meaningfully explored alternatives,” detransitioner Claire Abernathy wrote. “Eight months later, surgeons performed a double mastectomy on me. My entire life changed within months.”

Rowling, the British author of the Harry Potter series, asked supporters of gender-transition procedures for minors to read the article, arguing that it reflects experiences shared by others in similar situations. She also contended that some individuals are pressured into pursuing gender-transition procedures or are vulnerable due to experiences of abuse.

“I challenge every single person who believes minors should be enabled and even encouraged to transition to read this first-person testimony to the end,” Rowling wrote. “I’ve lost count of the messages I’ve had from detransitioners, mostly girls, detailing outcomes just as bad and sometimes worse. A high proportion are abuse survivors and/or have a history of poor mental health. Now they struggle with physical issues impossible to resolve.”

Rowling has become an outspoken opponent of gender ideology, particularly as it affects victims of abuse. In January 2025, Rowling criticized a Canadian women’s shelter that allowed a gender-confused man to stay at the facility where he ultimately sexually assaulted multiple women.

“The thing that never happens has happened again,” Rowling wrote, commenting on the assault charges.

Rowling ended her X post by calling out the cult-like character that many of those who support gender ideology find themselves adhering to — an ideology with protests and slogans mattering more than the stories of victims.

“If you’d rather chant slogans and look the other way, you are complicit in this appalling scandal,” Rowling wrote.

“It could never have happened without the support of a cultish culture that has demonised whistleblowers, hounded victims and attempted to scare the rest of us into silence.”
