Technical Brief: The Project 20380 “Savvy” (531)

Classification: Multi-role Guided Missile Corvette (NATO: Frigate)

Role: Littoral warfare, anti-ship strike, and “green water” power projection.

The “Stealth” Factor

The Savvy isn’t just a boat; it’s a floating ghost. The hull and superstructure are built using radar-absorbent fiberglass and composite materials, significantly reducing its radar signature. To a U.S. Coast Guard cutter’s radar, this 2,200-ton warship can appear as small as a fishing trawler.

Weaponry: A “Pocket Frigate” Punch

Despite its small size (about 105 meters), the Savvy packs the firepower of a much larger vessel.

  • Main Gun: 100mm A-190 Arsenal naval gun. It can fire 80 rounds per minute at targets up to 21km away.
  • Anti-Ship Missiles: 8 × Kh-35U (Uran) missiles. These are “sea-skimmers” designed to fly just 15 feet above the water to evade radar detection until it’s too late.
  • Air Defense: 12-cell Redut VLS (Vertical Launch System). This system can carry a mix of 9M96E medium-range missiles (from the S-400 family) or “quad-packed” 9M100 short-range missiles for swarming threats.
  • Close-In Defense: 2 × AK-630M 30mm Gatling guns. These spit out 5,000 rounds per minute—the final wall of lead against incoming missiles.

Anti-Submarine & Torpedo Tech

The Savvy is famously equipped with the Paket-NK system. This is a dual-purpose launcher that can fire “anti-torpedo” torpedoes—essentially a missile defense system but for underwater threats.

Aerial Support

The aft deck features a permanent hangar and landing pad for a Ka-27 “Helix” helicopter, typically used for long-range submarine hunting or scouting ahead of the tanker it’s escorting.

The 2026 Tactical Reality

While a U.S. Coast Guard Legend-class National Security Cutter is larger and carries better sensors for law enforcement, it lacks the heavy anti-ship missiles found on the Savvy. In a direct “stand-off” situation during the blockade, the Savvy’s ability to strike from 260km away with its Uran missiles creates a significant “deterrence gap” that likely influenced the decision to let the tanker pass.
