RTX 5090 PC Melts: $5,245 Hardware Failure Exposes High-End Prebuilt Quality Risks

The $5,245 Prebuilt RTX 5090 Nightmare: When Hardware Fails and Warranties Collide

When a PC gamer’s GPU with a 12VHPWR or 12V-2×6 power connector melts, it is typically in a custom-built machine where the owner bears the sole responsibility of filing a warranty claim. However, when a prebuilt system fails, it often opens a frustrating loop of finger-pointing between manufacturers while the customer is left with a scorched graphics card, power supply, and power cords.

RTX 5090 connector melt

That exact scenario happened to Tom’s Hardware reader Anthony DeMarco, whose father purchased a $5,245 Digital Storm Corsa prebuilt system equipped with an AMD Ryzen 9 9950X, 2TB Crucial T700 Pro SSD, 64GB of Kingston Fury RGB RAM, and an Nvidia GeForce RTX 5090 from PNY. Delivered in May 2025, the system was tested briefly and then boxed up until DeMarco graduated college and secured his first job.

Upon setting up the computer in August 2026, problems surfaced within two weeks. After noticing a burning smell and screen flickering, DeMarco discovered that the power wires were severely melted and fused into the connectors on both the GPU and the power supply.

The damage extended heavily to the 1,000-watt semi-modular Digital Storm power supply featuring custom blue-sleeved cables, completely melting the cable head and exposing bare wires at both ends.

Navigating the Warranty Blame Game

With a fried system, DeMarco faced a wall of bureaucratic policies. Digital Storm offers a one-year warranty on parts and three years on labor, meaning the hardware components were past the system builder’s parts coverage window. However, component manufacturers like PNY typically provide a three-year limited warranty on their GeForce RTX gaming GPUs.

When DeMarco contacted PNY for an RMA (Return Merchandise Authorization), the company denied the claim based on the use of third-party or custom system builder cables. PNY’s support policy states that only PNY-approved power cables or adapters included in the box are covered under warranty for 16-pin (12VHPWR / 12V-2×6) connections.

After hitting dead ends with both Digital Storm and PNY, DeMarco filed a report on the Consumer Product Safety Commission SaferProducts.gov database and sought help from tech publications. PNY later responded to press inquiries, noting that they are reviewing the case to engage the customer directly, while Digital Storm declined to comment.

What Should Buyers and Builders Do?

This high-profile failure highlights the inherent risks of buying prebuilt hardware and letting systems sit unmonitored during the critical first year of warranty coverage. For prospective buyers, purchasing systems directly from brands that manufacture both the GPU and PSU (such as ASUS or MSI) can streamline support. For DIY builders sticking to custom cables, ensuring secure seating and utilizing manufacturer-approved adapters remains the safest precaution against the notoriously unpredictable 16-pin connector standard.
