Thousands of demonstrators have marched in cities throughout Germany to protest Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s plan to overtake the nation’s army service system, accusing the federal government of laying the groundwork for compelled mobilization.

On Friday, the German parliament permitted adjustments to the military-service legislation increasing recruitment and giving Berlin instruments to reactivate conscription if volunteer numbers fall quick.
