Elon Musk has weighed in on One Battle After Another, one of Hollywood’s most controversial films of the past year. And by his own admission, he didn’t even know it existed until now.

Responding to a post from Jack Posobiec on X comparing the Academy Awards’ embrace of One Battle After Another to the backlash surrounding the recently released Citizen Vigilante, Musk unloaded on the Oscar-winning film in blunt fashion.

What do you think? Post a comment.

“I didn’t even know this crap movie existed,” Musk exclaimed. “Hot garbage. The Oscars have become unwatchable and their pathetic ratings show it.”

The comment quickly went viral, adding yet another high-profile voice to the growing criticism aimed at both the Academy Awards and what many perceive as Hollywood’s increasingly partisan tastes.

What Is One Battle After Another?

Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Paul Thomas Anderson, One Battle After Another is a political action thriller loosely inspired by Thomas Pynchon’s novel Vineland. The film follows members of a radical left-wing revolutionary group whose past violent activism comes back to haunt them years later.

The story depicts the revolutionary organization carrying out bombings, robberies, and attacks against government institutions before shifting to an older protagonist attempting to protect his daughter from the consequences of those earlier actions.

While supporters have praised the film’s filmmaking, performances, and themes surrounding family, political extremism, and redemption, critics have argued that it romanticizes or sanitizes left-wing political violence.

Those criticisms intensified after the film won six Academy Awards, including Best Picture.

For many conservative critics, that success became symbolic of what they see as Hollywood rewarding films that align with progressive political messaging while dismissing movies with opposing viewpoints.

The Citizen Vigilante Controversy

The discussion surrounding One Battle After Another reignited because of the release of Citizen Vigilante.

Directed by Uwe Boll, the film follows a man who becomes frustrated after witnessing violent crimes committed by migrants and what he views as a justice system unwilling to adequately punish offenders. He eventually begins targeting criminals himself while becoming an increasingly polarizing public figure.

Critics of the movie argue that it functions as anti-immigration propaganda and fear that its premise could encourage vigilantism or reinforce negative stereotypes about migrants. Some have accused the film of presenting an overly simplistic view of complex immigration and crime issues.

Supporters counter that the film tackles legitimate public concerns surrounding crime, border security, and failures of the justice system. They argue that dismissing the movie as propaganda avoids engaging with the real-world issues it attempts to dramatize. Defenders also point out that stories centered on vigilante justice have existed for decades across the political spectrum, from Death Wish to countless superhero films.

Whether audiences ultimately agree with its message or not, Citizen Vigilante has become one of the year’s most politically divisive releases.

Musk Joins the Growing Backlash

Musk’s comments echoed the broader frustration expressed by Posobiec, who argued that Hollywood was celebrating a movie depicting left-wing revolutionaries while many critics and media outlets were condemning Citizen Vigilante.

The Tesla and SpaceX CEO didn’t mince words.

Rather than simply criticizing One Battle After Another, Elon Musk expanded his criticism to the Academy Awards themselves, suggesting the ceremony has become increasingly disconnected from mainstream audiences.

The Academy Awards have indeed struggled to recapture the massive audiences they once enjoyed. While recent ceremonies have seen modest rebounds from historic lows, viewership remains well below the numbers the Oscars regularly posted during the 1990s and early 2000s.

For critics like Musk, that decline reflects growing dissatisfaction with Hollywood’s priorities and the kinds of films that receive the industry’s highest honors.

A Debate That Extends Beyond One Film

The reaction to One Battle After Another illustrates a much larger cultural divide over how political themes are portrayed in entertainment.

Supporters see the film as an ambitious exploration of ideology, family, and historical consequences. Detractors believe it glamorizes political extremism while receiving accolades that would likely never be afforded to films presenting a more conservative perspective.

Likewise, Citizen Vigilante has become a lightning rod for debate over immigration, crime, media bias, and artistic freedom.

Musk’s comments ensure that conversation isn’t slowing down anytime soon. Whether audiences agree with his assessment or not, his criticism has once again placed both films—and the Academy Awards themselves—at the center of an increasingly heated cultural discussion.
