The skies over western Iran have become a playground for U.S. Navy aviators as Operation Epic Fury enters its fourth week. Recent footage shows an F/A-18E/F Super Hornet from the USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN-72) conducting high-speed, low-altitude maneuvers near the city of Dezful, just miles from the Iraqi border.
These “dashing” low-level flights serve as a bold demonstration of American air supremacy, following the systematic suppression of Iran’s heavy radar-guided air defense networks. However, military analysts warn that “flying freely” at low altitudes exposes even the most advanced strike fighters to the “Sambush”—a Surface-to-Air Missile Ambush.
The Hidden Threat: Passive Air Defenses
Despite the “flattened” state of Iran’s strategic defenses, mobile and passive systems remain a lethal wildcard:
- The “Silent” Intercept: Unlike large SAM sites, light systems like the AD-08 Majid use infrared (IR) or electro-optical (EO) guidance. They emit no radar signals, meaning a pilot’s Radar Warning Receiver (RWR) stays silent until the missile is inches away.
- Recent Precedents: This low-altitude risk was highlighted by the March 19 incident where an F-35A was raked by shrapnel from a passive interceptor, and a subsequent near-miss on an F-15E in the Strait of Hormuz.
- Tactical Shift: As the US transitions to using shorter-range munitions like JDAMs, pilots are forced to fly closer to these concealed “ambush zones.”
While the Super Hornet remains the Navy’s cost-effective workhorse in 2026, these daring maneuvers over Dezful underscore the narrow margin between air dominance and a tactical catastrophe.
