Ukraine’s STING S Downs Jet-Powered Geran-5 as Drone Air Defense Enters New Race

Ukraine’s 1020th Anti-Aircraft Missile Regiment publicly documented a combat interception of a Geran-5 kamikaze UAV using Wild Hornets’ STING S interceptor drone.

Ukrainian air defence forces have shot down Russian jet-powered one-way attack drones in several recent interceptions. While previous interceptors could more easily chase relatively slow piston-powered Shaheds, these new drones likely rely on improved acceleration, guidance and positioning to intercept the 450–600 km/h Geran-5 at short range.

On September 19th, Wild Hornets published footage showing the “Rubin” crew of Ukraine’s 1020th Anti-Aircraft Missile Regiment using its new STING S interceptor to shoot down a Russian Geran-5. Wild Hornets subsequently published footage of another Geran-5 interception involving a STING S. The footage also appears to underline the importance of skilled operators, although the exact guidance architecture and level of automation used by the STING S have not been publicly disclosed.

The technical specifications of this new drone model are currently unknown, but it appears to be an enlarged version of the company’s previous drone interceptors. Designed to shoot down one-way attack UAVs such as the Geran and Shahed, as well as reconnaissance drones, previous-generation STING drones have a claimed successful hit rate of 80–90%. Earlier versions were reported with an effective engagement range of around 25 kilometers, while more recent variants have reportedly demonstrated ranges of up to approximately 37 kilometers. They are propelled by four rotors, have a cruise speed of around 140–170 km/h, a maximum speed of up to 280 km/h and a maximum flight altitude of more than 7,000 m. Considerable focus has been placed on their low cost and reliability: their bullet-shaped frame is 3D-printed and they are relatively simple to operate, with qualified FPV operators reportedly requiring around two days of additional training before battlefield use. They are man-portable, can be launched from almost any surface without a catapult and can return to their launch point if the target is eliminated by another drone. STING drones have previously shot down targets at altitudes of more than 7,000 m.

The Geran-5 itself is a very different system compared to its predecessors and was considered a difficult target to intercept. Like its predecessor, the Geran-4, it is a turbojet-powered kamikaze UAV used to attack critical infrastructure, but its developers abandoned the delta-wing configuration characteristic of previous models in favor of an aerodynamic airframe closer to that of a cruise missile and optimized for higher speed and extended range. It is around 6 meters long, with a wingspan of up to 5.5 meters, and carries a warhead of approximately 90 kilograms. It is reportedly powered by a Chinese TELEFLY TF-TJ2000A jet engine, giving it a cruise speed of approximately 450–600 km/h, a maximum flight altitude estimated at around 6,000 m and a stated range of about 1,000 kilometers.

Ukraine has been looking to reinforce its air defence capabilities as the Kremlin increases the intensity of its air campaign against critical infrastructure far beyond the front lines, including through the use of jet-powered one-way attack drones. Their increasing speed and range reflect a broader development of long-range strike capabilities by both sides amid continued Ukrainian attacks deep inside Russia. Drones such as the Geran-5 increasingly possess characteristics comparable to those of small cruise missiles.

The use of accurate and relatively inexpensive interceptor drones by Ukraine could provide an effective strategy to counter the growing threat posed by Russian long-range attack drones. Previous STING models have reportedly cost around $2,100 per unit. While the new STING S models are likely more expensive than older versions, they are still likely to remain significantly cheaper than conventional surface-to-air missiles and potentially cheaper than the targets they are designed to destroy, giving Ukrainian air defence forces an important economic advantage in the interception of one-way attack drones at short range. Production of Russia’s Geran-4 and Geran-5 has increased substantially, with Ukrainian intelligence reporting in August that monthly production of the two jet-powered models had surpassed that of the Geran-2. The Geran-5 had been regarded as a particularly challenging target for interceptor drones, but the emergence of the STING S indicates that Ukraine is rapidly adapting its defensive systems to counter the new threat.

Ukraine has been developing a variety of interceptors, including Vluchnyk’s new Zorelit v5, revealed on September 21st, with an effective range of 47 kilometers, nearly doubling that of earlier STING models. The Zorelit v5 is designed to engage faster aerial targets, although its reported maximum speed of around 416 km/h remains below the stated cruise speed of the Geran-5, meaning that its effectiveness against such targets will depend heavily on interception geometry, target trajectory and positioning. As both sides increasingly rely on cruise missiles and long-range attack drones for their air campaigns, while simultaneously developing drone interceptors as defence mechanisms, this accelerating technological competition is likely to grow in importance in the coming months.
