Return to Estard: Why Dragon Quest VII Reimagined is 2026’s Must-Play RPG

3 Min Read

Square Enix just dropped the third “Adventure Log” trailer for Dragon Quest VII Reimagined, and it’s looking like a total fever dream for RPG fans. This isn’t just a quick HD coat of paint; the developers have overhauled the classic “fragment-hunting” epic into a gorgeous, diorama-style world that feels like it was plucked right off a craftsman’s workbench.

The biggest takeaway from the new footage is the “hand-crafted” aesthetic. Taking a page out of the Link’s Awakening playbook, the characters—originally designed by the legendary Akira Toriyama—have been reimagined as 3D digital versions of actual, real-world physical dolls. The towns and dungeons follow suit, looking like intricately detailed miniatures that make the sprawling islands feel more intimate and alive than ever before.

Moonlighting and Monster Masters

The battle system is getting the most “love” in this remake. The clunky menus of the past are gone, replaced by a streamlined UI and some wild new mechanics that should make grinding a thing of the past.

The standout feature is definitely “Moonlighting.” This allows your party members to use two vocations at once, opening up ridiculous combo potential that the original PlayStation version never dreamed of. If things get too heated, you can trigger the “Let Loose” ability once a character gets worked up, or lean on the new Monster Master vocation. Their “Positive Reinforcement” perk literally summons a stampede of monsters to do the dirty work for you.

A Smoother Journey to Estard

For those who remember the original DQVII as a 100-hour marathon with a notoriously slow start, Square Enix has promised “tightened pacing.” By refining the narrative and adding optional side quests and minigames, they’re aiming to keep the momentum going without losing that “adventure piece by piece” magic.

With Prince Keifer and Maribel looking sharper than ever in their doll-like forms, this reimagining seems poised to be the definitive way to experience one of the series’ most ambitious stories.

Dragon Quest VII Reimagined is set to launch across Windows PC (via Steam and the Microsoft Store), Xbox Series X|S, Switch, Switch 2, and PS5 with a release date set for February 5th, 2026.
