Zack Wheeler’s Road to Recovery: Phillies Ace Hits Major Milestone

2 Min Read

The energy at the Carpenter Complex in Clearwater was electric this Monday as Zack Wheeler took a massive step toward his regular-season return. Under the watchful eyes of Bryce Harper and the Phillies’ top brass, Wheeler logged a two-inning simulated game—his first real action since undergoing thoracic outlet decompression surgery last September.

Wheeler looked sharp, firing 20 of his 29 pitches for strikes and sitting around 94 mph with his fastball. “It’s good to check that box,” Wheeler noted, confirming he felt no setbacks. While he’s still fine-tuning his curveball and working to regain 10 pounds lost during recovery, the veteran ace is officially on the fast track.

The Countdown to Citizens Bank Park

Fans won’t have to wait long to see the flamethrower back in action. Here is the mapped-out return schedule:

  • Thursday: Opening Day introductions at Citizens Bank Park (Ceremonial).
  • Saturday: 3-inning rehab start with the Triple-A Lehigh Valley IronPigs.
  • Late April: Potential return to the Phillies rotation (Expected window: April 22–28).

Bullpen & Injury Updates

The simulated game also provided a boost for the relief corps. Orion Kerkering (hamstring) tossed a clean inning, showcasing a new splitter that has manager Rob Thomson impressed. Though Kerkering will start the season on the IL, he’ll be in Philly for the home opener.
